The Monnaie de Paris is the oldest French institution still in operation today. Founded in 864 by King Charles the Bald, it has been responsible for producing French coinage for more than eleven centuries, reflecting the economic, political, and artistic history of France. Since the eighteenth century, it has been located on the Quai de Conti in Paris and remains a symbol of French excellence in metalworking and engraving.
Over the centuries, the Monnaie de Paris has evolved alongside the nation itself. From hand-struck royal coins to modern mechanically produced currency, its manufacturing techniques have continually adapted to technological advances and the changing needs of commerce. Each period is reflected in the portraits, symbols, and inscriptions featured on its coins, offering a unique record of French history.
Today, the Monnaie de Paris continues its minting activities while also playing an important cultural and artistic role. In addition to circulating and commemorative coins, it produces medals, official decorations, and limited-edition art pieces. Its museum and workshops preserve and celebrate a remarkable heritage that illustrates the evolution of coinage, engraving, and French craftsmanship through the centuries.
