Art Nouveau emerged across Europe during the 1890s and flourished until the outbreak of the First World War. In reaction to the historical revival styles of the nineteenth century, the movement sought to create a distinctly modern artistic language inspired by nature, flowers, plants, insects, and organic forms. Flowing, asymmetrical lines became the hallmark of this new aesthetic, influencing architecture, decorative arts, and design.
In the decorative arts, artists and craftsmen created furniture, glassware, ceramics, and decorative objects in which function and ornament were seamlessly combined. Materials were explored with great creative freedom, resulting in works distinguished by their originality, craftsmanship, and artistic innovation.
Art Nouveau jewelry experienced a remarkable flowering through the work of designers such as René Lalique, Georges Fouquet, and Henri Vever. These jewels emphasized artistic expression and beauty over the intrinsic value of precious materials alone. Plique-à-jour enamels, gemstones, pearls, and motifs inspired by women and nature gave rise to some of the most inventive and iconic creations in the history of jewelry.
