The Romantic period, which flourished during the first half of the nineteenth century, placed emotion, imagination, and individual expression at the heart of artistic creation. In reaction to the rationalism of the previous century, artists, writers, and craftsmen drew inspiration from nature, history, legends, and human sentiment. This poetic vision of the world profoundly influenced the decorative arts, painting, literature, and jewelry.
In jewelry, Romanticism was expressed through highly symbolic and sentimental creations. Motifs such as flowers, hearts, doves, and serpents were particularly popular, as were sentimental jewels containing locks of hair, miniature portraits, or hidden messages. Designers also looked to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and other historic styles for inspiration, creating pieces rich in detail, symbolism, and emotion.
As the nineteenth century progressed, Romantic taste gradually evolved toward more eclectic and archaeological styles, influenced by historical discoveries and the great international exhibitions of the era. Although its forms changed over time, the Romantic spirit left a lasting legacy by celebrating personal expression, imagination, and emotion—values that continue to inspire artists and designers today.
