The eighteenth century is regarded as one of the golden ages of French decorative arts. During the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI, artists and craftsmen achieved exceptional levels of skill in furniture making, silverwork, ceramics, and jewelry. The period is distinguished by its pursuit of refinement, elegance, and harmony in design.
During the first half of the century, the Rococo, or Louis XV style, favored flowing curves, asymmetry, and ornament inspired by nature. From the 1760s onward, the archaeological discoveries of Pompeii and Herculaneum encouraged the rise of Neoclassicism. The Louis XVI style consequently embraced greater restraint, straight lines, and motifs derived from the art of antiquity.
By the end of the century, the French Revolution profoundly transformed artistic tastes and patterns of production. Nevertheless, the legacy of the eighteenth century remained highly influential and continued to inspire generations of designers and craftsmen. Today, this period is celebrated for the quality of its workmanship, the balance of its forms, and the enduring excellence of its decorative arts.
